It's Official! Starting in 2025, Coding and AI Will Be Included in the Elementary School Curriculum

The Indonesian government has confirmed that starting in the 2025/2026 school year, courses in Coding and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be included in the curriculum for elementary school students. This decision was made as part of an effort to improve digital literacy and foster a younger generation capable of leveraging technological advancements in a positive and productive manner.

As stated on the official website of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the teaching of coding and AI is crucial in modern education during the Industry 4.0 and 5.0 eras. Without adequate technological skills and understanding, the younger generation will face significant challenges in competing in the job market. Therefore, incorporating coding and AI into the school curriculum is not merely an innovation but also a crucial step in shaping a competitive workforce capable of adapting to the evolving times.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, explained that the academic paper on coding and AI education covers various aspects, including educational foundations, the concepts taught, the scope of the material, the duration of instruction, as well as the qualifications and competencies required of the teachers responsible for these subjects.

According to the academic curriculum, fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school students will receive two class periods per week to learn the basics of coding and AI. According to Mu’ti, some of the material to be taught includes the following:

“Coding instruction at the elementary school level will focus on introducing the basics of programming in a way that is easy for children to understand. Students will learn to solve everyday problems in a structured manner using tools such as building blocks or picture tiles. Meanwhile, in AI education, students will be taught about the impact of AI on daily life, the ethical and morally responsible use of AI technology, how to distinguish between AI and non-AI, and the basic concepts of how AI works—namely, input, process, and output,” he said.

Challenges in Implementation

Although this policy has been welcomed by many, there are several challenges that must be overcome, including:

1. Teacher readiness

Many elementary school teachers lack a background in technology and programming. Therefore, the government will provide specialized training for educators.

2. Access to technology

Not all schools have adequate computer facilities, especially in remote areas. The government plans to collaborate with the private sector to support the provision of technology infrastructure.

3. Effective learning methods

The curriculum must be designed to be easily understood by children without overwhelming them.

As an educational platform focused on teaching coding and AI to children, Codero Education is here to support the implementation of this new curriculum with methods that are fun, interactive, and age-appropriate. With experienced instructors and a curriculum tailored to educational standards, Codero Education helps children understand the basic concepts of programming and artificial intelligence through game-based learning and project-based learning approaches.
