When Do Children Start Learning to Code? Here's the Right Age!

In today’s digital era, coding has become one of the essential skills that should ideally be introduced from an early age. Many parents wonder, “At what age should my child start learning to code?” The answer: the earlier, the better as long as the learning approach is fun and age-appropriate.

Why Should Children Learn Coding Early?

Learning to code isn’t just about becoming a programmer. More than that, coding develops logical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills, and persistence in completing tasks. Children who are used to thinking logically from a young age often find it easier to understand various school subjects and are better prepared to navigate a tech-driven future.

Experts say that children around 5–6 years old are in the preoperational stage, a phase where they begin to use symbols and develop their thinking abilities. This makes it a suitable time to introduce them to basic coding concepts even earlier in some cases. However, it needs to be done through visual, playful, and exploratory methods such as puzzles, command blocks (like ScratchJr), or educational games.

Ideal Ages for Learning to Code Based on Developmental Stages

To make coding education more effective, it’s important to match the teaching methods and materials to the child’s age and level of understanding. At Codero, we group classes by age and education level to ensure structured and targeted learning:

Tiny Class

Ages 5–8: Kindergarten (A & B), Grades 1–2
At this stage, children are introduced to basic coding logic through play-based activities, interactive storytelling, and visual platforms like Scratch Junior. The goal is to develop logical thinking patterns and introduce technology in a fun, engaging way.

 Younger Class

Ages 9–12: Grades 3–6
Children begin to explore more complex coding concepts like variables and loops. They learn to create games, animations, and simple projects using Scratch and other block-based coding tools.

Creator Class

Ages 13–18: Middle School – High School
In this class, students transition to text-based programming like Python or JavaScript. They work on real-world projects such as building simple websites, automating tasks, and even creating robotics systems controlled by code.
